Hypermobile or extra bendy people have different concerns when it comes to the gym.
As someone who is extra bendy and works with hypermobile/ Ehlers Danlos Syndrome patients as a physical therapist here are my three things to look for in a personal trainer:
3 Questions To Ask A Personal Trainer
- Have you worked with someone in the past who was extra bendy/hypermobile are you willing to learn?
- How comfortable are you adjusting our plans the day of, depending on how I feel?
- If a movement is bothering my body, how will you handle that?
Why This Matters
Building muscle, moving through motion and feeling more confident and resilient in your body are great things that can come from the gym. But, sometimes we need a little extra input on what our bodies are doing as they are doing it.
The goal is to find someone who is willing to emphasis your body’s resiliency. The goal is to find someone who knows exercise form and is creative enough to modify on the fly with you. A personal trainer who is comfortable with movement to know that they can work similar muscles with a slight modification to exercise will be the most successful when working with hypermobile athletes.
Working with someone who is willing to learn about your body with you is key. Finding a personal trainer that is willing to learn with you.
